biography
Born Carolina Accardi on October 9, 1924, in Trapani, was one of the most influential Italian abstract painters of the post-war period. After earning her classical high school diploma at Liceo Ximenes in Trapani, she obtained her artistic diploma as a private student in 1943 and studied at the Academies of Fine Arts in Palermo and Florence, graduating in 1947. Moving to Rome in 1946, she frequented the Osteria Fratelli Menghi, a hub for artists and intellectuals, and married painter Antonio Sanfilippo in 1949, sharing home and artistic research with him.[1][2][5]
In 1947, as the only woman in the group, **Carla Accardi** signed the manifesto of **Forma 1** alongside Pietro Dorazio, Pietro Consagra, Achille Perilli, Ugo Attardi, Mario Sanfilippo, Alberto Guerrini, and Giulio Turcato, advocating a formalist and Marxist abstract art that transcended figuration and geometric rigidity. In the 1950s, her painting evolved toward gestural and sign-based abstraction, influenced by critic Michel Tapié, who promoted her in international shows like *Individualità d’oggi* and at Galerie Stadler in Paris. She held her first solo exhibition in 1950 at Galleria Numero in Florence and participated in events such as *Arte astratta e concreta in Italia* at the National Gallery of Modern Art.[3][4][6]
A pioneer of Italian feminism, **Carla Accardi** co-founded **Rivolta Femminile** in 1970 with Carla Lonzi and Elvira Banotti, drafting its manifesto featuring one of her symbolic signs. In the 1960s, she joined the Continuità group, reintroducing color with optical effects and experimenting with transparent plastic supports as luminous diaphragms. She exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1964, 1976, 1978, and 1988, and was appointed to the Brera Academy in 1996 and as a Venice Biennale advisor in 1997. She passed away in Rome on February 23, 2014, leaving a legacy of continuous experimentation in abstract art.[2][5][7]
