ADORAZIONE DEI MAGI
olio su tavola, cm 55x78
The painting depicts the traditional Gospel episode of the Adoration of the Magi, one of the most common subjects in 16th-century Flemish painting, particularly prized for its potential to feature compositions rich in figures, exquisite descriptive details, and refined lighting effects. The Virgin and Child receive homage from the three Kings of the East, depicted according to canonical iconography at different stages of life, accompanied by a large entourage of figures, within an architectural setting in the Northern style.
The work reveals the typical characteristics of 16th-century Flemish art: meticulous rendering of surfaces, careful attention to decorative elements, brilliant colors, and a lively narrative built through a multitude of secondary episodes. The oil-on-wood technique allows for an extremely precise rendering of details, from the ornate garments and the gifts of the Magi to the naturalistic and architectural elements in the background.
