‘Il est si beau de vivre, et la vie est si douce qu'elle ne peut pas être mauvaise!’
(Émile Zola, La Joie de vivre, 1884)
With this phrase, the illustrious naturalist writer celebrates the beauty and uniqueness of life. Similarly, with this catalogue, paraphrasing the title of the novel, Pandolfini pays tribute to the world of wine, which has fascinated and enriched our culture and our lives for centuries.
To do this, we could not have had a better travelling companion than one of the protagonists of world wine history for over 400 years: Château d'Yquem.
Thanks to our collaboration with the legendary Bordeaux winery, we have been able to include in the catalogue some lots that are unique in terms of both rarity and preservation: bottles from over a century ago, such as a bottle of Yquem from 1920.
I would like to thank Yquem's CEO, Lorenzo Pasquini, without whom this unique event would not have been possible, and highlight the valuable contribution of the Château's négociants, Mestrezat and Sarzi Amadè.
The morning of 9 April will begin with an exclusive tasting, led by Pasquini himself in tandem with Gabriele Gorelli, Italy's first Master of Wine: alongside a number of historic vintages, the new Château d'Yquem vintage, 2023, will be presented in a national preview.
The event, for the press and some of our top clients, will be followed by a light lunch provided by Enoteca Pinchiorri, and then by the sale of the lots in the first part of the catalogue: the first ten, as already announced, come directly from the cellar of the famous château, and are accompanied by exclusive experiences, from a visit with tasting to dinner with overnight stay in the iconic castle. Following the Yquem lots from private collections, we come to one of the most eagerly awaited moments of the auction: the auctioning of a Single Owner Collection of extraordinary value. These bottles, preserved to perfection, represent the best the international market has to offer: there is a large selection of French wines, with a particular focus on the Burgundy region, with extremely rare bottles such as Musigny Blanc from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, followed by the greatest wines from Piedmont and Tuscany, and finally around twenty lots from Napa Valley. Among the latter, we would like to highlight the three final lots dedicated to Screaming Eagle: from the most prestigious estate in the New World, we have two magnums and a bottle of the elusive Sauvignon Blanc, a gem for true collectors!
On the morning of 10 April, we will reopen sales with a session dedicated to French wines: first Champagne, then Bordeaux, Rhône and Burgundy. Finally, as is now customary, there will be a session dedicated to the most famous of the Burgundy domaines: over twenty lots from Domaine de la Romanée Conti.
The second day, and this exceptional catalogue, will close with bottles from Italy: from the vineyards of Trentino to the rows of Sangiovese in Tuscany, passing through the enchanting landscapes of the Langhe, there are bottles of all sizes, which we are sure will satisfy even the most demanding enthusiasts.
As you may have noticed, with a few necessary exceptions, I have not gone into great detail in listing the lots, because there are always too many worthy of mention and, above all, so as not to spoil your enjoyment of discovering them by browsing through our catalogue.
