We are delighted to announce our upcoming event dedicated to Old Master Paintings, which will take place on 20 May 2026 in Florence. On this occasion, works of exceptional quality and variety, created by renowned international and Italian artists on panel, canvas, copper and alabaster, will be offered for auction.
The selection of works will be particularly meticulous and will span a period covering the 14th to the 18th centuries. The paintings on offer, almost all from prestigious private collections, will represent various iconographic themes and artistic schools, both Italian and foreign, and will focus primarily on narrative subjects.
In this regard, we would like to highlight the inclusion in the sale of works of outstanding artistic value, such as a rare late 14th-century Venetian panel by the Master of Teplice depicting Christ Blessing with Saints Peter and Paul (?), a delightful Madonna and Child with Saints by Lorenzo Costa, and a masterpiece by Giovanni Battista Benvenuti, known as l’Ortolano, depicting Saint Anthony of Padua. Remaining in the 16th century but moving to the Lombardy region, we will present a previously unseen large-scale panel painting of Saint Jerome, attributed to a Lombard painter active in the mid-16th century. Among the most interesting and fascinating works in the catalogue, we cannot fail to mention the large Portrait of Annibale Visconti by Vittore Ghislandi, known as Fra Galgario. Remaining in Florence, we will present some previously unseen 17th-century canvases by the leading including a Saint Margaret with the Dragon by Felice Ficherelli, known as Il Riposo, an Allegory of Temperance by Mario Balassi, and a Saint Benedict Among the Brambles by Matteo Rosselli. The 17th-century Italian school will also be well represented by other major figures, such as a large signed and dated canvas by Luca Giordano depicting Christ and the Adulteress, a David with the Head of Goliath by Giovanni Battista Spinelli, and a Saint Reading, attributed in the catalogue of the famous 1993 exhibition Giovanni Serodine (1594/1600–1630) and his Roman predecessors to a ‘painter associated with Serodine’.
Of particular interest are also four canvases depicting Fantastic Views of River Cities by Gherardo and Giuseppe Poli, and an extraordinary canvas measuring just over two metres depicting Piazza dei Miracoli and the Tower of Pisa, painted by a Tuscan artist during the height of the 18th century.
There will also be small objects and items made from precious materials, such as the previously unseen touchstone by Alessandro Turchi, known as l’Orbetto, a splendid copper plate boasting a prestigious attribution to Giovanni Lanfranco, and three ceiling panels elegantly painted with shell-shaped gold leaf from the workshop of Andrea Mantegna in Mantua.
The department is available to conduct confidential and discreet valuations. For further information regarding the auction, please contact us at dipintiantichi@pandolfini.it
