STONE STELE WITH MEDITATING BODHISATTVA, JAPAN, 18TH–19TH CENTURY
Stone stele depicting a bodhisattva in high relief in the classic pensive pose (jpn. hanka shiyui 半跏思惟), with one leg bent and the hand gently supporting the chin. This iconography, particularly popular in Japan in the worship of Kannon (Avalokiteśvara), evokes the image of Nyoirin Kannon (如意輪観音), the manifestation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion in contemplation of the world. The serene expression, downward gaze, and relaxed posture convey a strong sense of introspection and spiritual benevolence.
The figure is carved with remarkable sensitivity and a strong sense of proportion, set within an elegantly outlined arched niche. Dedicatory inscriptions are incised along the borders, bearing witness to the votive purpose and the devotion of the commissioner.

in pietra raffigurante un bodhisattva in alto rilievo nella classica posa pensosa (jpn. hanka shiyui 半跏思惟), con una gamba piegata e la mano che sorregge delicatamente il mento. Questa iconografia, particolarmente popolare in Giappone nel culto del Kannon (Avalokiteśvara), richiama l'immagine del Nyoirin Kannon 如意輪観音, la manifestazione del bodhisattva della compassione in contemplazione del mondo. Il volto sereno, lo sguardo rivolto verso il basso e la postura rilassata trasmettono un forte senso di introspezione e di benevolenza spirituale.
La figura è scolpita con notevole sensibilità e senso delle proporzioni, incastonata in una nicchia arcuata elegantemente delineata, con iscrizioni dedicatorie incise lungo i bordi che testimoniano l’intento votivo e la devozione del committente.
