biography
Gaetano Pesce (La Spezia, November 8, 1939 – New York, April 3, 2024) was one of the greatest Italian designers, architects, and sculptors of the twentieth century, a central figure in radical and experimental international design. Trained at the IUAV in Venice, where he studied under masters such as Carlo Scarpa and Ernesto Nathan Rogers, Pesce developed an unconventional and innovative approach from his early career. In 1959 he founded the "N" group in Padua, dedicated to programmed art, consolidating his position as a leading exponent of avant-garde Italian design. His industrial design career began in 1962 with collaboration with C&B (now B&B Italia), for which he created the celebrated UP Series (1969), comprising seven models of polyurethane foam armchairs that became icons of world design. The UP #5 armchair, known as "La Mamma," represented the first industrial design product to convey a political message, denouncing the condition of women. In 1971 he collaborated with BracciodiFerro (Cassina group) on the Moloch lamp, while in 1972 he participated in the landmark exhibition "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" at MoMA in New York. After relocating to New York in 1983, Pesce founded Fish Design by Gaetano Pesce and continued intensive work in architecture, design, and sculpture. His constant research into advanced materials, particularly resin and polyurethane, led him to develop innovative techniques that created objects with strong visual and tactile impact. In 2002 he presented the "Nobody's Perfect" collection, realized with elastic resins, embodying his philosophy of "diversified series" where imperfection and variation became celebratory elements of individuality. In 1996 the Centre Georges Pompidou dedicated a retrospective to him, recognizing his fundamental contribution to contemporary design. Pesce worked for major international brands including B&B Italia, Cassina, Meritalia, and Le Fablier, realizing public and private projects in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Asia. His legacy remains indelible in the world of design, characterized by an unceasing drive toward innovation, experimentation, and social commitment through form.
