The panel depicts the Virgin holding the Child in her arms while holding cherries in both hands. Behind them, on the right is a dark curtain, and on the left, a rocky cave with an opening.
It is cataloged in Federico Zeri’s Photo Library indiscriminately as both Bernardino and Francesco Zaganelli, but in light of recent studies, it seems correct to attribute it to the latter. Francesco was the elder of two brothers who were leading figures in the Romagna art scene between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, described by Roberto Longhi as “Siamese twins” due to their close artistic collaboration.
Thanks to the black-and-white photograph preserved in the Zeri Photo Library, we can see that at some unspecified time - perhaps in the 19th century - the background had been completely painted black, concealing the curtain on the right and the rocky cave on the left, and that the Child was holding an extra cherry, added - perhaps at the same time as the work on the background - to cover the private parts, which, as was typical between the 15th and 16th centuries, were supposed to be visible and uncovered.

Il dipinto è eseguito su un supporto ligneo che è stato assottigliato e successivamente applicato su una tavola di legno antico composta da due elementi uniti in senso verticale .. Alla visione diretta la pellicola pittorica risulta essere ben conservata sia per gli spessorii materici che per la mantenuta brillantezza dei pigmenti. Si evidenzia qualche sgranatura di colore in prossimità del margine inferiore, soprattutto nel piede destro del Bambino. Le dimensioni della composizione originaria potrebbero essere state un po’ ridotte lungo i quattro margini e quidi non corrispondenti a quelle attuali.. All’esame con la lampada di Wood si evidenzia una vernice ossidata e opacizzata che lascia intravedere lievi ritocchi e velature nel corpo del Bambino. Gli interventi di ritocco sono di natura minima ed eseguiti a punta pennello. Restauri della medesima natura si segnalano anche nel celeste che compone la veste della Vergine.
