RITRATTO DI BACCIO BANDINELLI
olio su tela, cm 41,5x34,5
The present painting is a replica of the portrait of Baccio Bandinelli (1488–1560) executed by Andrea del Sarto (1486–1530). Two versions of this work are known: one preserved in the Galleria Palatina and the other in the Vasarian Corridor of the Uffizi in Florence. Critics have alternately considered one as the original and the other as the copy, or vice versa.
The painting held at the Uffizi has been documented in situ in the Tribuna since 1635 and attributed to Andrea del Sarto based on the testimony of Giorgio Vasari. The other version was acquired in 1797 and is today considered a copy of a lost original, following a restoration carried out for the artist’s 1986–87 exhibition.
