Da Pieter Paul Rubens
FLAGELLAZIONE DI CRISTO
olio su tela, cm 242x185
The painting is a reproduction of the canvas painted by Pieter Paul Rubens around 1615–1620 for the Church of St. Paul in Antwerp. Rubens, together with other contemporary painters, was commissioned to create a series of canvases depicting the Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary. The Flagellation is the second Sorrowful Mystery and is one of the most renowned religious works by the famous Flemish master, as it allowed him to showcase all his artistic qualities through contrasts of light and color, the strong dramatic and expressive power of the figures, and the emotional intensity of the scene.
