The four captivating works of the Chinese painter Youqua, dating from the period between 1840 and 1870, depict landscapes in China and serve as a precious historical document illustrating the encounter between Eastern and Western cultures in the mid-19th century. One of the works, titled "View of Whampoa," provides a glimpse of the island and anchorage from Dane's Island in the Pearl River. The presence of the Western cemetery in the foreground, popular between 1840 and 1855, provides an additional temporal clue. A similar view, dating around 1850, is attributed to the painter Youqua and is preserved at the Peabody Essex Museum.
The painting depicting Shanghai after the 1842 Treaty of Nanking highlights the port's significance for trade with the West.
