Narrano gli scrittori greci e latini che, al tempo del re Cecrope, sorse una contesa tra la dea Atena e il dio Poseidone su chi avesse il diritto di essere onorato nella capitale dell'Attica. Zeus, il padre degli dei, indisse una gara, giudici gli abitanti della città: chi avesse portato il dono più bello le avrebbe dato il proprio nome e vi sarebbe stato venerato come protettore. Atena portò in dono un grande olivo frondoso. Poseidone col suo tridente fece scaturire dalla roccia un agile cavallo. Tra i due il popolo scelse l'olivo. La città si sarebbe da allora chiamata Atene, in onore della dea, e la pianta d'olivo sarebbe stata conservata nel Pandrosio, il recinto sacro dell'Acropoli.

According to Greek and Latin writers, in the time of King Cecrope, a dispute arose between the goddess Athena and the god Poseidon over who had the right to be honored in the capital of Attica. Zeus, the father of the gods, called a contest, judges the inhabitants of the city: who had brought the most beautiful gift would have given his name and would have been venerated as a protector. Athena brought as a gift a large leafy olive tree. Poseidon with his trident made a nimble horse spring from the rock. Between the two the people chose the olive tree. The city was then named Athens, in honor of the goddess, and the olive tree was preserved in the Pandrosius, the sacred enclosure of the Acropolis.
