The work is registered at the Fernandez Arman Archive, which has confirmed its
authenticity.

Representative of the Nouveau Réalisme, the movement born around the critic Pierre Restany who in April 1960 drafted the manifesto. Arman, in the early fifties began to create his first Cachets, abandoning the canvas, and in 1959 Allures, variants of the Cachets, consisting of imprints made on the canvas with a variety of objects previously immersed in color. In the same year he began to create his Colères, compositions of broken objects, especially musical instruments, and his Accumulations, assemblages of consumer or rejection objects. in this phase of transition and change, the objects take shape again on the canvas, still represented with a firm and unmistakable line, like the representation of these violins dated 1961. Interested, from 1961 on, to the decomposition of the subjects through the découpage and focuses his research on numerous bronzes. The artist intends to denounce society and proceeds to "destructions", destructions obtained by force, by fire: violins, pianos, saxophones and various musical instruments.

The work is registered in the Piero Dorazio Archive, Milan, as per certificate on photography on 19.02.2018Master of abstractionism and brilliant colorist. During his career as an artist he met many of the protagonists of the abstraction movement, consolidating among the protagonists. After joining the activity of the social art group, he attended the study of Guttuso, but soon moved away from the theses of socialist realism. He resides a year in Paris and in 1950 he opens a bookshop-gallery in via del Babuino in Rome "l'age d'or". The Golden Age, or six magical years (1945-1951) in which the artistic debate in Italy and post-war Europe as well as tangible results in art was never so intense and productive. He is already internationally famous when he established himself in New York in 1953. He returned to Italy and continued his intense exhibition activity, performing artistic stays in European cities. In 1961 he approached the activity of the Zero Group in Dusseldorf. Participates in three editions of the Venice Biennale, at an exhibition at the MOMA in New York, exhibited at the Galerie Im Erker in St. Gallen. His research focuses on the pictorial properties of form, color, spaces and materials: primary color spots arranged on direct curves, crossed color bands, plays of transparencies and chromatic structures, revealing plays of light and surfaces.

Nella pittura e percorso artistico di Afro, poco spazio è lasciato all’improvvisazione , tutto si basa su processi complessi, nel suo sofisticato percorso creativo..

“io tendo sempre a dare delle immagini pittoriche la maggiore efficacia espressiva, lapiù evidente. Queste immagini sono ancora un corrispettivo poetico della realtà…Evidentemente una forma pittorica in me non nasce mai solamente come forma, né un colore si giustifica solo nel suo rapporto di valore e di spazio ma ha bisogno di caricarsi di un significato espressivo” ( Caramel 1989). A tale data è già avvenuto l’incontro con il maestro americano dell’astrattismo Arshile Gorkj, attraverso il quale Afro accentuerà la destrutturazione della figurazione in funzione espressiva: il suo linguaggio si farà sempre più astratto, ma solo per divenire ancora una volta sintesi ideale di realtà.

At the end of the Sixties, the first ironic and parodic footage of Picasso's works took shape in the production of Baj; at the same time they date the first works for which he used plastic materials, already used in the past and from that moment used, for example, in Ties, a symbol of Western culture, exhibited at the 15th Lissone prize (1967) and at the Studio Marconi of Milan (1969). Between a "continuity of ideological background [... and] what we could call a continuity of confirmation", since the early seventies Baj came to new goals and "great imaginative spikes", which led him above all to the installation and "environmental dissemination" . Architetto e pittore cileno, considerato tra i massimi esponenti del surrealismo internazionale. Dopo gli studi in architettura, nel 1934 si trasferisce a Parigi, dove lavora a stretto contatto con Le Corbusier ed altri intellettuali del calibro di Federico Garcìa Lorca, Andrè Breton, Renè Magritte e Salvador Dalì. Aderisce presto al Surrealismo, elaborando una pittura personale incentrata su morfologie

psicologiche, in cui adotta la tecnica dell’automatismo: le macchie di colore steso sulla tela indirizzano il tracciato del pennello, le forme, la costruzione. All’inizio della Seconda guerra mondiale fugge a New York, dove esercita una decisiva influenza su altri artisti d’avanguardia come Jackson Pollock e Arshile Gorky. Trasferitosi a Roma nel 1949, diventa subito un importante punto di riferimento per il nascente astrattismo italiano; dagli anni Sessanta risiede a Tarquinia, stabilendosi in un ex convento dove è tuttora tumulato. Negli anni Settanta progetta e costruisce, assieme al pittore e scultore Bruno Elisei, l’”Autoapocalipse”, una casa edificata riciclando vecchie automobili, come provocazione contro il consumismo, che viene esposta in diverse città italiane. Nel 1985 il Pompidou di Parigi gli dedica una grande retrospettiva e le sue opere vengono esposte nei più importanti musei del mondo, da Washington a Tokyo, da Chicago a Londra.

In 1955, with Jaguer and with Dangelo, Baj founded the magazine Il gesto for the promotion of the nuclear movement in Milan; at the same time he became a correspondent of some of the most well-known avant-garde magazines, including Phases, Edda, Boa and Direzioni. In the spring he took part in the second Parisian exhibition of the Phases group, with whom he continued to exhibit for a long time. In the summer, again with Jaguer, he organized the "International exhibition of free forms", one of the most significant European exhibitions of informal art. In the first book of Il gesto, then presented, many of the works on display and texts by Dal Fabbro, Sanesi, Jaguer, Tsutomu Izima and Dangelo were published.
