A LARGE BLACK-LACQUER QIAOTOU AN WITH MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAY, DRAGON AND CLOUD MOTIFS (32 DRAGONS), MING DYNASTY

This qiaotou an altar table features slightly upturned ends and inward-curving legs. The entire surface is finished in black lacquer, accentuated by polychrome painting and mother-of-pearl inlays depicting no fewer than 32 dragons among swirling clouds. Three dragons dominate the central panel in a dramatic, powerful pose, while additional dragons—some playing with a flaming pearl—populate the rest of the table. The mother-of-pearl pieces are harvested from the shell’s most luminous sections, shaved “as thin as cicada wings” and embedded into the lacquer, lending a brilliant iridescence. A masterpiece of Ming lacquerwork, exuding imperial grandeur and striking artistry.

明 墨地彩漆嵌螺钿云龙纹大翘头案（共三十二龙）

此案为翘头式，案面两端微翘，足内收。通体髹黑漆，施彩绘并嵌螺钿，饰云龙纹三十二，三龙居中，姿态矫健，余者散布案面，或戏火珠，或穿行云海，动静相宜。螺钿选自贝壳之精美部分，薄如蝉翼，嵌于漆中，光彩耀眼，为明代螺钿漆艺之代表作。

Questo tavolo-altare di tipo qiaotou an presenta le estremità del piano leggermente rialzate e le gambe rastremate verso l’interno. L’intera superficie è rivestita di lacca nera, arricchita da pitture policrome e intarsi di madreperla raffiguranti ben 32 draghi fra le nubi. Tre draghi dominano la parte centrale con posa vigorosa, mentre gli altri—alcuni intenti a giocare con la Perla Fiammeggiante—decorano le sezioni laterali. Le tessere di madreperla, sottili come ali di cicala, sono state intarsiate nella lacca per ottenere un effetto di intensa iridescenza. Capolavoro dell’ebanisteria laccata dell’epoca Ming, emblema di maestria tecnica e raffinatezza imperiale.
