A HARDWOOD OPIUM BED WITH MARBLE INSETS, CHINA, LATE QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY

also referred to as a daybed or chaise longue, features a pierced apron and a backrest and sides with marble inserts. The structure is notable for its balanced combination of sculptural elements and decorative materials. A finely pierced apron displays geometric and floral motifs, enhanced by "dream stone" marble plaques with natural veining that evoke traditional landscapes.

The backrest and armrests are also pierced with sinuous vine and framed patterns, and they include marble inserts that add depth and a pictorial quality, a highly prized practice in Chinese furniture of the era.

Originally used for rest and the ritual consumption of tea or opium, this piece represents a refined example of late imperial Chinese craftsmanship, where aesthetics and function harmoniously coexist.

con grembiule traforato e schienale e fianchi con inserti in marmo. La struttura si distingue per l’equilibrata combinazione di elementi scultorei e materiali decorativi, con un grembiule finemente traforato a motivi geometrici e floreali, arricchito da placche in marmo "dream stone" con venature naturali evocative di paesaggi tradizionali.

Lo schienale e i braccioli, anch’essi traforati con motivo a tralci sinuosi e motivi a riquadro, presentano inserti in marmo che conferiscono profondità e suggestione pittorica, secondo una pratica molto apprezzata nel mobilio cinese dell’epoca.

Utilizzato originariamente per il riposo e il consumo rituale del tè o dell’oppio, questo letto (o chaise longue) rappresenta un raffinato esempio di artigianato cinese tardo-imperiale, in cui estetica e funzione convivono armoniosamente.
