"The Carp Leaping Over the Dragon Gate” originates from a legend cited in Taiping Yulan, quoting San Qin Ji: “When the Yellow River surges, many fish attempt to ascend the Dragon Gate. Those who succeed become dragons.” This powerful allegory represents perseverance in adversity, transformation, and ultimate success, especially in the context of civil examinations or social advancement. Porcelain with this motif was widely appreciated in late imperial China as a blessing for academic success, career promotion, marriage, or family prosperity.

清末⾄⺠国 粉彩鲤⻥化龙纹堆塑天球瓶 ⾼ 63 厘米 瓶作天球形，腹绘鲤⻥跃浪，颈部堆塑红龙吐⽔，寓意“鲤⻥化龙”。

“鲤⻥化龙”典出《太平御览》引《三秦记》：“黄河⽔暴，⻥多从龙⻔ 上，得上者为龙。”传说中黄河龙⻔⽔势湍急，唯有鲤⻥奋⼒跃过者可 化为真龙，象征逆境中奋发图强、终成⼤业。 ⾃古即寓意⾦榜题名、⻜黄腾达、前程似锦，为⽂⼈、仕宦、商贾所 喜，常作为祝贺科举、升迁、婚嫁与⼦嗣昌盛的吉祥题材。

"La carpa che salta la Porta del Drago” è una leggenda tradizionale cinese riportata nel Taiping Yulan e nel San Qin Ji: “Quando il Fiume Giallo è in piena, molti pesci tentano di risalire la Porta del Drago; chi vi riesce si trasforma in drago.” Questa allegoria simboleggia tenacia, trasformazione e successo raggiunto superando le difficoltà, in particolare negli esami imperiali o nella carriera. I vasi in porcellana con questo motivo erano considerati doni augurali per il successo negli studi, le promozioni, il matrimonio o la prosperità familiare.
