Alessio Montagano

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT MILAN

Alessio Montagano, a native of Milan, developed a passion for numismatics from a very early age, obtaining collection coins from the stores and markets in his city.  He developed his interest in Medieval and Renaissance history which led him to Tuscany, where he studied the coins minted in this region in greater depth.  In 2003 he became a member of the Società Numismatica Italiana [Italian Numismatics Society] and graduated from the Università Cattolica with a degree in Economics, presenting a thesis entitled La moneta in Toscana tra '200 e '300 [Coins in Tuscany between the 13th and 14th centuries].  In 2007 he published the first volume for the M.I.R. (Monete Italiane Regionali-Italian Regional Coins) series dedicated to the minor mints of Tuscany; a book which, in 2009, received an award in London from the I.A.P.N (International Association of Professional Numismatists).  The second volume, which was published in 2011, included an evaluation and classification of all the coins produced by the Florence mint from the Middle Ages to the Unification of Italy and also received an award from the I.A.N.P.

He has been a member of the prestigious Accademia Italiana di Studi Numismatici [Italian Academy of Numismatic Studies] since 2010.  He has authored numerous articles that have appeared in the most distinguished Italian and international numismatic magazines.  He took part in the conception of cultural exhibitions including "Fior di Fiorini" and "Moneta e Devozione".  He participated in the realization of the volume published by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato [State Mint and Polygraphic Institute] entitled Le Zecche italiane fino all'Unità [Italian Mints until the Unification of Italy] and another volume entitled Italian Coins for The British Museum in London, dedicating himself to production in Siena and Montalcino.

His assessments are featured in the sales catalogues of the most prestigious Italian and foreign companies involved in the field of numismatics.  He has been the head of Pandolfini’s Coins and Medals department since 2016.
