Marcello Dudovich’s graphics production is an essential reference in the history of the Italian advertising poster. The artist investigated society life in its manifold aspects, describing its faceted beauty in sensitive. sophisticated studies. In the golden years of the Liberty style in Italy, the Triestine artist’s work contributed to emancipating the advertising poster from a condition of inferiority with respect to the “major” arts and to establishing it as a totally independent genre. Dudovich’s name was associated with many prestigious companies, first and foremost, from 1906, the Mele brothers’ Naples-based department store chain and, from 1921, the Milan-based Rinascente chain, with which he established a stable professional relationship that lasted until 1956. Of these three drawings with their simple, elegant lines, the panel on the right is a sketch for the Rinascente’s Spring-Summer 1922 advertising campaign, while the centre panel appears to be a reworking of the female figure from the poster for the Mele stores’ new fashions for Summer 1908.
