Dance, for Francesco Messina, was one of the highest expressions of feminine beauty, capable of divinising the female figure by exalting the harmony and the simple grace of its forms. Following in Edgar Degas’ steps, beginning in the Seventies Messina’s interests converged in a multiplicity of works devoted to the theme of the dancer portrayed in various poses, both dynamic and static. The key player is always the model’s body, a plastic projection into the surrounding space, “fixed” in bronze as in a series of frames from a film of a single ballet. The long-limbed build, the gaunt anatomy and the excellent muscle tone, as well as the form of the subject’s bust, recall the physique of Luciana Savignano, a celebrated ballerina and Messina’s occasional model, portrayed here in a pose that is collected but at the same time highly-strung. The downcast eyes and the crossing of the legs and arms in the classic position of apparent rest contrast with the entirely interior tension and the suffused muscular vibration evinced by the dancer as she maintains the pose. The flounces of the skirt and the disorderly hair, piled carelessly atop the head, step in to break up the line and increase the sense of depth and chiaroscuro impressed by Messina on this lovely composition.
