It was in Paris that De Nittis improved his ability of being a perceptive observant of reality and above all of that aspect of city life linked to high society and style.

To appreciate the artist’s talent in representing scenes of daily life, it is sufficient to compare them with those painted by his followers and imitators.

What is striking in this painting is the atmosphere that the artist is able to recreate, moving, with extreme ease, from incredibly refined details to the splendour of the background, obtained with the skilful use of patches of colour, with a chromatic clearness that is worthy of the best Impressionist art.

All these qualities give the painting the allure of a masterpiece, in which every brush stroke, every touch of colour merge into the layout of the composition, creating a small miracle.

Guidando al Bois is a precious document to recapture the voices, the lights, the colours and the spirit of the age.

The artist presented this work to the Salon in 1874, with the painting Che freddo!.

“… So, the jury accepted only one of them, Che freddo!, but before the decision became definitive, one of Goupil’s associates went to the house of the painter from Puglia and, speaking in a roundabout way, made him understand that if he gave up his excessive desire for independence and showed he was willing to submissively return to the fold, he would be spared from the humilation of a rejection.

Giuseppe De Nittis understood that this was a decisive moment, for himself and for his career, and was brave enough to give a flat no for an answer, thus renouncing a profitable contract and the protection of an ultra-powerful clique, but at the same time  regaining his complete artistic freedom.

He therefore made the great decision which severed in one fell swoop any further self-interested dependency on Gèrome and Messonier on one side and on Goupil and associates on the other, and that allowed him to eventually get closer to Manet, to Degas and to the other Impressionists…” (see V. Pica, Giuseppe de Nittis, l'uomo e l'artista, Milano 1914, p. 104).

Downhearted and disappointed by the refusal, due to the scheming of the art dealers who supervised the hanging committees and not to the quality of the work, he wrote a letter to his friend Adriano Cecioni (1836-1886) on 5th April, informing him that he had decided to give in to the requests of Degas (1834-1917) to exhibit at Nadar’s (1820-1910) with the Impressionists, and to terminate his contract with the “Maison Goupil”.

The following journey to London, his meeting up with his friend J.J. Tissot (1836-1902) and his wife’s advice persuaded “Peppino” to realign with the style that better suited him, being the painting of subjects from a middle-class setting and of female figures in scenes from conventional Parisian life, highlighting moments of vitality and seduction.
